Purchasing experience:
I just got my ruby-red Nokia E63 last Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Fone Style Acessories store at Cyberzone at SM North, Manila, Philippines (for those who are not from the Philippines) for the price of PHP 12,500 (USD 263.324). I surveyed the prices from the other competing stores at Cyberzone. Prices vary from PHP 14,000, 13,700, and 13,000. However, the Nokia Store and Care Center at Cyberzone doesn’t have the unit yet. I asked the Nokia sales lady about it and she is completely unfamiliar with the unit. She doesn’t even know that it exist!
I checked the contents of the package which contains the following:
~ Nokia E63 unit
~ 1GB microSD memory card
~ charger
~ headphones
~ user manuals
Next, I checked the authenticity of the unit. I saw the Nokia holographic logo on the battery. I saw the IMEI serial number inside the unit and compared it with the IMEI via *#06#. They matched. I also saw the NTC certification label inside the unit.
I contacted by phone the Nokia hotline (on Dec 16, 2008 because of a memory corrupted problem) and asked why their store at Cyberzone doesn’t have the E63 yet. The agent told me that third party dealers and Nokia stores have different delivery dates. The agent asked the IMEI of my unit. She verified and concluded that my unit is valid (I was then advised to bring my unit to the Nokia Care Center at Cyberzone). The unit is not fake. It’s original and it’s made from Finland.
Probably, I may be one of those fortunate people who got this E63 after the official release date (Dec 11, 2008). Cyberzone got their E63 on Dec 13, 2008 which is also the day that I bought mine. I paid cash, however.
Usage review:
Let’s start with the weaknessess:
1. The camera in the unit is mediocre. It’s not bad but not also the best. The camera tends to perform bad at indoors where lighting is insufficient. The pictures tend to produce greeny, grainy spots on the image. However, sufficiently lighted indoors such as work office tends to produce good and acceptable images. Outdoor shots look even better but only when there is sun. When it’s dark, the greeny, grainy spots tend to appear again. Oddly, I discovered that if you put the quality on Normal mode and resolution at 640×480 the pictures tend to produce less greeny, grainy spots than on High mode and maximum resolution. Zoom the pictures at 100% and you will see the difference.
2. Media player is too simplistic. The included player is basic. You cannot add themes. Modifying the playlist is tedious. There is also no Visualization. However, when it comes to playing quality, the sounds are excellent.
3. No stopwatch application! I was wondering why there is no bundled stopwatch application. This is supposed to be a productivity, business fitted unit. If there’s one thing that matters most to business, that would be time (besides money of course).
4. Radio player needs a microphone to play. Why in the world it needs a microphone first to activate the radio player? Why can’t it be directly activated? So here’s what I did, I looked for an old microphone. Took out it’s jack and use that as a switch. So I can use the loudspeakers on the unit to play the radio without the annoying cables from the microphone.
5. No USB cable included on the package. This could be a negative depending if you like to transfer files. In my case, I’m fond of transferring files back and forth from the unit to my computer. It’s tedious to remove the card and insert it on a memory card reader and back to the unit.
However, for all those weaknessess and cons, I must say that the E63 is good and an excellent purchase. Here are the strengths that I found on the unit:
1. They keyboard is easy to use. I haven’t use an E71 yet but comparing the keyboard spacing, I must say the E63 is much, much better.
2. The Video recorder captures good quality movies. Surprisingly, the built-in camera takes mediocre photos but it does an excellent job when it comes to recording movies. Usually, it’s the opposite.
3. The interface and the OS are quick and responsive. No hanging application. No slowdowns yet.
4. Messaging is easy (though I still need to set-up the MMS on this unit. Apparently, Globe doesn’t have a predefined set-up for the E63 yet, though it’s exactly similar with the E71).
5. Voice call quality is clear though I find that the unit seems to heat faster than normal (or maybe that is normal?)
6. Many people think that the unit looks cheap because it’s made of plastic but actually if you hold the unit, it doesn’t feel like plastic. It feels very much metallic. It doesn’t feel cheap.
Question: How long can it record stuff?
What do you mean by stuff? Video? Voice? Photo? That depends of course with the available memory.
More memory means more recording time. Less memory means less recording time. Of course that also depends upon the quality of the record. Higher quality means less recording time as well.
Setting my unit to Video mode capture with 268MB left on the Memory card enables me to record at least 1 hour more of video.
With Image mode, with the same amount of memory, I can take 766 photos.

In my case, voice. Mind you, it’s not necessarily sa amount ng memory. My E61 can only record up to a minute’s worth of music or voice kahit may 2GB memory card na nakasalpak–and worse, I can’t configure anything to lengthen the recording.
Ahh, you mean the Voice recorder. Right now, I have 195MB free space left on my microSD. On the Voice recorder application, at High quality setting, it’s recording right now and it reads 00:20/46:53 and now it’s 00:26/46:53. It means that with 195MB free space, I can record voice for up to 46 minutes. The theoretical limit really depends upon the memory. But the practical limit depends upon the the Operating System.
For example, in a FAT32 file system on Windows, you can only store a file up to 4GB per file. You cannot exceed the 4GB limit. I’m sure the SymbianOS has this kind of limitation. But as far as I know, you can record and play voice without problems for 60minutes or possibly 120 minutes. As long as you can play a full length Mp4 video, then playing 3 hours of voice shouldn’t be a problem.
hi bro! i just bought my e63 today and i’m kinda having this “problem” (i dunno if it is really a problem or is it just me being OC)…whenever i type something (SMS, filename, etc), i feel that my phone’s delayed in flashing it on screen (especially after pressing the space bar). For example, if i will type “Nokia E63″, after hitting the space bar to type “E”, there’s a delay in displaying it on screen for like a second. So if i type “N O K I A” (with spaces in between), it will not immediately display it. This problem only happens every after i hit the space bar (but cmon, we always use the space bar!)…are you having the same “problem”? do you know how to fix it? nabobother kasi tlga ako sa kanya.
-cris, davao city
Hmmm, this is interesting. I tried simulating that on my E63. Somehow there’s a slight delay, maybe around 1 second or less. However, when I tried typing fast (I typed M Y N A M E I S M A R K ), I noticed there’s a considerable slow down. Yes, you’re right there’s a significant delay. However, I don’t find it annoying because I don’t usually type that fast and I don’t usually text in CAPS with SPACES. Yet, I don’t think that this should be the case. We should be able to type in CAPS with SPACES fast and without delays.
The delay doesn’t happen if there are no spaces.
I will try to find a workaround for this problem.
It appears that the problem happens when you tap the SPACE bar quickly. It doesn’t matter if it’s on lower case or upper case
hi flamark,
fellow e63 user here. hoping you could help me with something. i just want to check if there’s something wrong with my phone. In Phone Memory under details, mine reports:
15mb memory in use
104mb free memory
11kb calendar
140kb contacts
203kb messages
3237kb video clips
180b documents
0B MIDP apps
the listing below is just around 4-5MB however my phone reports to be have 15MB of phone memory in use.
thanks for the very helpful review!
I have 1GB Memory Card. Here’s the report on Memory Details:
768MB Memory in use
190MB Free memory
Usage:
11MB Images
453MB Sound Files
22MB Video Clips
66MB Documents
Add that up and it’s about 742MB. So I’m missing 26MB (768-742MB).
Well, the only reason why there’s discrepancy is because the Memory Details doesn’t show all the files that are used by the phone. There are hidden files which are not reported by the tool, ie cache, temp files.
Try using a 3rd party program to check the hidden files and folders in your Phone’s Memory. Try using ActiveFile. I’m using version 1.40.186
It’s free. Just search Google for it. The author is Alie Tan.
hi, just want to clarify, wala talagang data cable? but the usb port is a standard mini usb, right. so if ever, you can use any data cable with a mini usb. thanks.
Yes, there is no USB data cable included. The USB port is a mini-USB port.
As long as the USB data cable is compatible it should work, but I don’t think that all data cables even if they would fit would assure 100% that they would work.
It’s better to check the compatibility lists of the cable. I use a card reader to transfer files.
tnx for the reply bro. i’ve also asked some E63 users and they don’t seem to have this phone delay problem. now, its kinda interesting that we both have this delay-thing. bka magka-batch or something ang unit ntn or whatever. i’ve sent an email to nokia and they said that the fault could be due to a software issue —> cgro nga, madalas ng mag-freeze ang phone ko lately…meh mga times na di ko ma-access ang phone menu. its really weird coz i did not install any 3rd party application on my phone, ‘di nman puno phone or card mem ko (around 20% p lng nagagamit ko sa dalawa), plus i’ve tried resetting (both hard & soft reset) the unit, still no change. Nokia advised me to bring my mobile phone to their authorized service center and have my phone checked for further analysis. hopefully, they will be able to fix it. honestly, i’m getting annoyed with all these things. kaya nga nag-shift ako frm N Series to E Series coz i thought mas “stable” ang OS or something…same p rin ng previous phone ko (N95 8GB) dami bugs and software issues. hahayz. anywys, maybe 2mrw, ill bring my unit to their “not-so-friendly” nokia care center… again tnx a lot. great site by the way! u r a great help to other E63 users…have a hope-filled new year bro!
@ imee:
medyo bad trip tlga na there’s no usb cable included sa phone package. i myself was surprised when i opened the package. oh well, its a cheap device..what can we expect. kaya nga best-in-bluetooth-transfer via my mac ang ginagawa ko everytime i want to transfer files…hassle! pro if ur thinking of buying this phone, well i can say na sulit nman xa…for around 13k u get wifi, a decent screen, qwerty keyboard, fast OS, etc…ok na rin!
Cris, have you checked the OS and program version of your E63 unit? Have you also confirmed that those users who had E63 have a different OS version?
They might not be exactly emulating the problem.
@Cris and flamark,
thanks for the replies. i’m planning to buy the E63 kasi, I have various USB cables around the house that i think i can use with the E63, if ever. hopefully mag work naman sila.
thanks uli!
Hi Flamark,
Thank you for the report on the details of your Memory Card. Would it be okay to post here as well your Phone Memory details? Many thanks!
Regards,
Borly
P.S.
I also have that delay you guys mentioned whenever I type my messages.
hello,
i just bought one from mega. would like to ask you guys: where could i get a good case for my e63? i’m clueless which on which would be better, one with straps (to hang around my neck) or one without? i just lost my old phone (for the 2nd time) so am now extra wary to not lose it.
thanks in advance!
Go to Greenhills. Go to the 2nd floor where the cheap 2nd phones are being sold. But do not buy there. There’s another small entrance there that sells good CAPDASE cases for the E63. It’s gonna cost you PHP 700 but it’s good and the best.
dahil nabasa ko bago pa ko magka-fone.. hindi na ko ng-panic sa delay ng space bar.. hahaha..
i also have the delay.. kaya ayun.. prang feeling ko puno na lng memory of something eh hndi pa nman..
another na napansin ko.. kapag gumagamit ako ng scroll sa contacts.. tas msyado mabilis.. may mga limalabas na linya linya.. sa mga names.. na parang any moment mgsa-shut down yung fone?.. hahaha..
tell me if mern dn kyo nito.. =) thanx po..
I haven’t encountered that problem on the contacts. Probably, it’s just display refresh issues. Nothing to worry about
E63 is a very robust phone.
hi guys, have you tried installing themes? i am encountering errors eh. certifiacte error daw
Yes, I’ve tried and I managed to install most of them. Sometimes you just have to change the date to an older time, probably around 2008 or 2007.
guys, it’s crazy but i just lost my red e63 last week! nakajeep kasi ako and nasa left front pocket ko. sobra kong love yun, at napakaimportante ng phonebook kasi gamit ko sa trabaho. actually, di ko pa natanggal ang plastic cover ng screen. i will have it blocked at NTC. may chances ba na mapapa-unblock yun?
That’s sad. It’s already on your front pocket and still got stolen? I think it’s still possible to unblock the unit. Anything is possible with hackers. Just bring any phone at Recto or Divisoria. Even if it cannot be unblocked, there’s still a way for those thieves to make profit on that unit.
I believe the cheapest price is PHP 12,300.00 at Greenhills.
